How to set a time limit on your pedagogical activities?

The option to set a time limit for a learning activity allows you to better manage your learners' work time. Once the time is up, the activity automatically ends, without any action required on their part.

This feature is useful in several contexts:

  • Optimizing concentration: your learners know exactly how much time to devote to the activity, which promotes effective learning.
  • Reproduce assessment conditions: you can set up constraints similar to those of an exam or in-person certification.
  • Stimulate engagement: adding a time limit introduces a fun and dynamic dimension that encourages learners to stay focused and motivated.

How do I set a time limit?

  1. Go to your learning activity design
  2. Above your question (next to the feedback settings), you will find a field where you can set the time limit
  3. Check the “Limit response time” box
  4. Enter the maximum time allowed for the activity (in seconds)
  5. Save your learning activity: your activity is now timed!
Important: the setting applies to each question individually.

If your activity contains several questions, you must set the duration for each one individually.

What happens for the learner?

  • When they start the activity, a countdown timer starts in the form of a progress bar.
  • At the end of the allotted time, the activity ends automatically. If the correct answer was entered, the question is counted as correct. If the learner did not enter the correct answer within the allotted time, the question is counted as incorrect.
  • This allows learners to manage their time transparently, and you can be sure that everyone is completing the activity under the same conditions.
